Arizona Public Service Set to Launch High Concentration Solar Power Project

By Alison Shapiro
Arizona Public Service is launching a new project, the Community Power Project, which will help them learn how to handle high concentrations of solar power from different sources. APS is looking into this because individual household generated solar power can strain the larger electrical grid of a town or city. Because Arizona law requires that 15 percent of energy come from renewable sources by 2025, any setbacks such as these APS wants to address now.
APS plans to launch this project in Flagstaff, Arizona, where the community is very open to embracing solar energy. The project will install solar panels equivalent to 1.5 megawatts of renewable energy capacity in Flagstaff, specifically Northeast Flagstaff. The project could help reduce 1540 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, according to the US Department of Energy.
The study is to be partially funded by the US Department of Energy. The Department’s grant for the project will be around $3 million, while the rest of the $15 million costs of the project will be funded by APS.
APS hopes to boost its “smart grid” with the study, which is a distribution system that manages changes as they occur. In the long run, the study should help APS respond to any challenges with the distribution of solar power. In exchange for allowing the study to be done, APS is removing the upfront costs of the solar panels for customers and is guaranteeing a constant rate for the solar electricity bills for the building owners. The study will also create green jobs for the private builders who will be working on the solar panels. All in all, the project will create new jobs, more renewable energy, reduced carbon emissions, and more insight into solar power distribution, which is a win-win for everyone involved.

Italy Opens New Type of Solar Plant
Posted on September 7, 2010
Filed Under SOLAR | Leave a Comment
According to the Associated Free Press, Italian company Enel has said that it has opened the first solar powered plant using molten salts to store energy from the sun.
This innovative solar technology allows the solar energy to be collected and stored for hours, eliminating the need to use solar energy only when the sun is out and it is available. Although other solar power plants have the ability to store energy from the sun, this technology will allow the heat transfer fluid to be made out of natural materials and will not require the use of oil or other synthetics.
This is no surprise coming from Italy, which is Europe’s second biggest producer of solar power. The plant is called Archimede after an ancient Greek scientist who used burning mirrors to set fire to Roman ships during the Punic Wars.
The plant is projected to save around 2100 tonnes of oil and 3250 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Hopefully this new solar plant will help push renewable energy further and will create competition for better renewables in the future.
Alternatives to the Alternatives

Over time (and especially more recently) Americans have learned more and more about renewable energy. We hear the benefits of solar, the upside to using wind power, and the many reasons why hydrogen power is an excellent choice. However, sometimes we forget that technology is constantly moving forward and yet another bright alternative is always on the horizon.
After reading a blog on Foxnews.com, I was assured that this was definitely the case. One of the alternative energy sources discussed, which I found the most interesting, was the use of the methane from cow manure. According to the blog, it only takes 4 cows to power an apartment using the 64 gallons of manure they create daily. This seems like an excellent way to create energy considering most of us need both energy and cow products in daily life. This truly innovative technology will allow us to put to use what was once waste. You know what they say... one man’s cow manure is another man’s electricity?
Another technology that is discussed is hydrogen power from irrigation canals. While normally hydrogen power is thought of in the large scale such as a river dam, small scale can be helpful too. Scientists from Natel Energy, Inc of Alameda, California have been building this technology for the irrigation canals that carry water from the Colorado river. When I heard irrigation canals my first thought was my home in the Midwest. With the combination of methane power and irrigation canals (ditches possibly?) the farms in the heartland could not only feed America, but power it as well!
However, while I do have a soft spot for the Midwest, these alternative energies are being developed, perfected, and sold across the entire nation. We have found that energy is stored in places we would have never dreamed of and so far, we have yet to run out of new ideas. With that in mind, I encourage you to take part of this historic moment in American history as we transition to a cleaner future of sustainability. Be aware of your energy use and try to reduce it to show support for the development of alternative energy.
Renewable Energy Can Renew West Virginia

After reading one of my past blogs, “On Coal River,” and hopefully getting a chance to see the the documentary (or at least the YouTube trailer I attached), you have probably realized the true state of desperation that West Virginia is stuck in. A state that is ripe with countless resources is being held down by both their government and coal companies alike.
In West Virginia, coal mining is a way of life and a family tradition. Generations hold these jobs down and many are willing to protest for them to boot. While these jobs are very important to them, everyone must realize that this is because that is all that is offered to them. They are paid low wages, hardly enough to live lifestyles that many of us would consider comfortable, and are forced to continue in that cycle because that’s the best there is.
However, this is how the coal companies like it. Their laborers are forced to work at low wages because they know they provide most of the job opportunities to the state. West Virginia places high taxes on corporations which keeps them out, leaving the coal companies to provide the jobs without any competition. According to the Tax Foundation, in 2010 the Mountaineers were ranked 7th highest in the nation in corporation taxes. This also allows major corporations to surround West Virginia – but not step in - and gain cheap labor from West Virginians who are looking from work. Corruption in the government from the control that coal companies have on government officials has created a vicious cycle that will be hard to stop.
This is when renewable energy comes into play. West Virginia needs to be restructured to be a major clean energy provider. Those streams, rivers, and mountain tops are excellent resources for wind and hydrogen power and both building and running the infrastructure would create countless jobs. I believe this all begins with a change in tax laws. West Virginia’s corporation taxes need to be lowered to provide incentives for large companies to move in. This will create competition in the job market and force the coal companies to change their ways. Massey and other companies will see that if they want to stay on top of the energy market they need to invest in alternatives. These companies are the power and funding that America needs investing in renewable energy and we need to show them that we support this transition.
