This summer SmartPower’s interns will be offering some fresh views on how to be Energy Smart as they immerse themselves in clean energy and energy efficiency.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to visit some family in New Jersey. My cousin just recently moved into a new place right near Atlantic City. I had never been, so I was excited to see what all the fuss was about. Well, I must admit that the actual “fun of the city left me with something to be desired. My attention was sparked by something else, something I hadn’t expected.

Driving into the city on route 30, standing almost 400 feet tall with a backdrop of high rises were five wind turbines. I was delighted, and filled with a sense of awe and pride. This was the first incident that I had physically seen that which I have been advocating all summer. Very cool.

I was curious to find out a little more about the project… Apparently the turbines are part of the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm, and produces approximately 19 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year (enough energy to power 2,000 homes with no emissions), and is used by the Atlantic County Utilities Authority Wastewater Treatment Plant, with any excess delivered to the regional power grid. The Ground Breaking was in September of 2005, with the Turbine Erection and then Commercial Operation coming about from October through December of 2005.

With the summer coming to a close, I can’t express how glad I was to see such a sight. I hope to see many many more in the coming years and adventures…
Come on America! Get Energy Smart!
