Saving the planet for less than 50 cents a day

quartersIt turns out that reports that the sky was falling were exaggerated. The Energy Information Administration has just released an analysis of the climate bill recently passed by the U.S. House and found that, contrary to “industry claims,” it’s only going to cost hte average American family about $140 more a year by 2020.

Energy costs would be higher, for sure, but as we’ve often pointed out here at SmartPower, investing in efficiency (which the energy and climate bill requires) will also save money.

The bill requires energy companies to help consumers lower costs during the early years of the program which would “mute the impact of higher energy prices for households until at least 2025,” said Kay Smith, an EIA economist.

The cost is only part of the equation, though.  This summer three governors went to Capitol Hill to tell Congress that investments in cleaner sources of energy have already created jobs in their state–and the energy and climate bill being considered in Washington is likely to create many more
