Commute to work on a string?

Taking public transit in replace of driving is always a great way to stay green. An innovative company, String Transport Systems Unlimited, would agree with you on this and even take it a step further. They have been developing an ecologically sustainable railway system with countless benefits in its construction called Unitsky’s String Transport System. This railway is not only hurricane, earthquake, and terrorist-proof, it is also a smooth ride and can support a speed of up to 500 kmh!

Some of the ecologically sustainable mentions on their website include low CO2 emissions, low land disturbance, and low energy consumption. It’s even cheap to build at only $50,000 per km. According to a recent blog in Gizmag, this eco-friendly railway is made up of concrete and high tension wires that run between towers situated 30 feet apart.

In my mind it resembles a cross between a train and a ski lift, the second of which I would be worried about riding in. The video below gives an excellent idea of what a set of tracks and train resemble:

A track was built about 100 miles outside of Moscow around 2001 but the product does not seem to be widely accepted yet (Gizmag). However, I see plenty of potential in the system and as our country moves closer and closer towards being entirely sustainable, ideas like this become increasingly more realistic for the near future. This is definitely something to keep an eye on as the technology continues to evolve. It may be how you arrive at work someday soon!
