CEA

by Willy Ritch

The Cambridge Energy Alliance (CEA) in Massachussets is one of those organizations that makes you want to ask “So, what’s the catch?” This city-sponsored non-profit has set out to provide energy efficiency improvements to homes and businesses throughout the city and finance them in such a way so that the home or business owner never really has to come up with any money. The trick is that CEA sets up financing for the renovations in such a way that the energy savings produced cover the loan payments (or in some cases exceed them.)

The goals of CEA are impressive–$100 million in investment over the next five years, with a target 50MW reduction in peak electricity demand (about 15% of what’s being used now), not to mention savings in heat and water needs. And the savings should be widespread–CEA is planning on serving 50% of all the buildings in Cambridge. Folks in Cambridge are probably feeling justifiable proud that there community is taking such a lead in energy efficiency with the innovative program—and it’s easy to imagine cities all over the country following Cambridge’s lead and taking this “big picture apporach.”

This landmark program caught the eye of the PBS Series NOW, which went to Cambridge to see the program in action.

We’re preparing some excerpts from the program for your viewing pleasure (of course you can watch the entire program on the NOW website)—Part One is about six minute and you can watch it on YouTube. Part Two coming tomorrow.
