Going solar in L.A.

If Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa gets his way, as much as ten percent of the city’s power needs may be met by solar power in the not-too-distant future.  This week, Villaraigosa announced his plan to make solar a significant component of L.A.’s power portfolio:

“L.A. has everything it takes to make this [solar plan] work,” said Villaraigosa, standing alongside environmentalists, union leaders and City Council members. “We have the sun in abundancy. We have the space. We have the largest municipal utility in the country.”

The LA Times reports that the proposal might be a savvy political move for the mayor:

Shifting Los Angeles to cleaner fuels could buttress both Villaraigosa’s run for reelection and any future run for governor. If he runs in 2010, Villaraigosa would likely face state Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown, an avid environmentalist.

Whatever his motivations, it’s encouraging to think that making a massive committment to clean energy is good politics.  It is clear that public support for clean energy and energy efficiency development is there–but sometimes it seems that it takes politicans a little while to catch up.  I’m glad Villaraigosa is reading the writing on the wall.
